Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA) English Language Arts (ELA) and Math:

Computer Adaptive Test (CAT)
Students are tested in four skill areas: reading, writing, speaking/listening, research. Type of questions possible: narrative, opinion, explanatory/informative for grades 3-5; narrative, explanatory/information, argumentative for grades 6-8. This component of the SBAs adapts to the skill level of the student as questions are answered.

Performance Task (PT)
Students are tested in two skill areas: writing, research. The first part of the PT requires the student to read a passage and answer three research questions. Next, the student has to write an explanatory/informational, narrative or opinion piece using the sources read. PTs are intended to demonstrate real-world problem solving.

These samples are for paper/pencil assessments, but they will give you an idea of what the questions are like. Also, if you click on a grade level under “Assessment Resources by Grade” you will have access to more testing resources including the “cluster quizzes”.
